4. How can the fight be brought to the enemy, gaining ground for the heroic motivation? 

Be the PCs first: 
Encounter: pursuit
Place: Northern Wilds, two hours later
Taking the dryad's tip, the group heads north in the hope of discovering how a dead orc would possess the official decorative insignia of a member of the Merchant Prince's elite naval forces.

Be the GM next:
Story Cube: spyglass
A small scouting band of orcs is watching the group. [Liliana's exploration score for keeping watch is high enough to spot them.] When they realize they've been noticed, the orcs attack.




Be the PCs once more:
Gino casts an Entangle spell, and three orcs are caught - two, in fact, are killed! [Yes, spells got that pumped up in this playtest iteration.] Don Pantaloni's Magic Missiles into the face of the remaining free orc put it down quickly. Orsini ties up the injured and entangled last orc. Don Pantaloni [intimidate skill + Orsini's help] questions the orc [Don Pantaloni speaks orcish as determined at the time of character creation, thank goodness] demanding to know where the fibula came from. The orc grunts that [Story Cubes: crown, airplane] its chief received gifts from "far away" people, and that's all the brute knows. The heroes demand that the orc take them to its leader.


5. How can any heroic gains from the results of Q4 suddenly be undermined as new information about the true face/scheme/power of the enemy becomes known?

Be the GM first:
Story Cube: hanging by hands from a bar
Encounter: revelation & combat
Place: Northern Wilds, an hour later
As the captive orc leads the group northward, a hilly forested area comes into sight. However, before they can get a closer look, two carnivorous apes attack - and they immediately go for the orc!

Be the PCs next: 
Gino's Shillelagh spell pounds one ape enough to give Orsini the chance to confront it head on and away from their captive. It's a fierce melee, and Orsini's fighting expertise [dice] are all that keep him from falling to the bludgeoning blows of the large beast. Meanwhile, Don Pantaloni casts a Phantasmal Force of imaginary orcs upon the other ape. The beast is tricked by the illusion and immediately attacks it. As Orsini slays the carnivorous ape he faced, the others finish off the distracted one. After observing the focused aggression of the apes toward orcs, Don Pantaloni [recall political lore] is pretty sure that they've all just stumbled into the middle of a turf war.

Be the GM once more:
The captive orc cannot confirm the elf's theory. It's dead, having been killed by the ape attack.


6. How can the adverse results from Q4 and Q5 be further intensified, forcing the heroes to commit to a do-or-die course of action in accordance with the heroic motivation? 

Be the GM first:
Story Cube: backpack
Encounter: intrigue and pursuit
Place: Orc Hills, Northern Wilds, a few minutes later
Beyond the next clearing, the hills that the dead orc had been leading the heroes toward come more clearly into focus. A very large number of the creatures is readying for something clearly violent.

Be the PCs next:
The heroes don't need to tax their skills too much to realize that what they are looking at is a war party. The orcs and apes that they had earlier encountered had merely been scouts. Don Pantaloni was right - the orcs have moved into the carnivorous apes' territory and are readying to engage them in final battle, and that battle is going to happen right now!

Be the GM once more:
The orc chief emerges from his hill cave and HE IS HUGE. He leads his fellow orcs in a war chant that escalates into a hideous cacophony...
