Fight Your Own Wars marches on...

Last February, I interviewed Barry Miltenburg, the designer of the solo war game system Fight Your Own Battles on his upcoming project, the FYOB campaign system, Fight Your Own Wars. Recently, Barry began playtesting the FYOW system, and he gave me a quick update on the operations:

A couple of frantic months have seen the development of a whole bunch of rules and planning for the BIG test campaign - the invasion of the German occupied Isle of Wight by British liberating forces.

This very night, unknown to the German command, elements of 1 Commando are creeping ashore to secure key road junctions and tomorrow, the British will land 3 Brigades back onto IOW soil.

How will the Germans react? They think that the attack will come from the NE and have set up their defensive strategy with this in mind (for those who know the island that is the Newport/Ryde coast). However, the British attack will come from the SE and hit Totland, Freshwater and Afton.

So, it seems as though Operation Sealion is about to really happen! A grand test such as this one is only possible after many, many little tests, and Barry has been hard at work for several months, now:

The naval convoy and air combat rules are working well but only after a major re-write of some of the fundamentals of the bound and day rules. I was hoping to keep FYOW and FYOB as compatible as possible and whilst they still run together, I will have to keep a close eye on action that is happening on the map and also on the table simultaneously!!

With all that worked out, Operation Sealion proceeds!

Will the Germans think that this landing is a bluff to draw resource away from the real attack that will come later in the NW? Will the Brits (and Canadians) be able to roll up the light defences in the SW area and move inland? The German defences are thin but with only 1 tank Regiment (of 5th Armoured Brigade) and the light support offered to the air-landing forces by the Tetrarchs, how will Gen Beech's 4th Army get on?

Fight Your Own Wars will hopefully be available by Solo Tabletop Gaming Appreciation Month, November 2011!
